A transparent background is a pixel property
PNG can store an alpha channel: a value that describes how opaque each pixel is. An edge can be partly transparent, which helps curves blend onto a background. The checkerboard an editor shows is a visual aid for empty space; it should not appear in the exported pixels.
A white background is different. It is made of opaque white pixels, so it stays white when the image is placed over a colored page. Saving a white-background image as PNG does not automatically make that white disappear. You need a cutout to change the alpha of those pixels.
Choose PNG when the background must stay flexible
A transparent PNG is useful for a product that will appear on several page colors or designs. It also works as a reusable cutout master before you generate white, cream or colored versions.
PNG uses lossless encoding for the pixels it stores, but that does not reverse damage from the source. A blurry JPG converted to PNG remains blurry. Nor does PNG guarantee a small file: high-resolution photographic detail and transparency can produce large downloads.
Choose JPG when the background is fixed
JPEG does not support an alpha channel. Exporting a transparent cutout as JPG means combining it with an opaque backdrop. In CatalogPolish, a selected color becomes that backdrop; if the background setting is Transparent, the JPG export falls back to white.
JPG often suits opaque photographic images because you can trade some image detail for a smaller file. The right quality depends on the content and intended display size. Fine label text and high-contrast edges can reveal artifacts sooner than a smooth background. Compare an actual export before applying a lower setting to every image.
Watch for halos when the destination color changes
A pale fringe that is invisible on white can become obvious on a dark page. The cause may be imperfect cutout edges or pixels already blended with an earlier background. View the transparent PNG over both a light and a dark backdrop to understand what is in the asset.
Use a small refinement brush carefully near the edge, and compare with the original. Avoid repeatedly converting a cutout between opaque JPG and PNG in the hope of restoring transparency. Once flattened, the old background is part of the visible image and must be separated again.
Keep a master and make delivery copies
Retain your original photo and, when useful, a reviewed transparent PNG. Export JPG or WebP delivery copies from that source for each destination. This avoids repeatedly recompressing an already compressed JPG.
Format support varies across upload forms and publishing systems, so test a single image where it will actually be used. Choose dimensions and file size for that destination. A file that looks good in an editor can still be too large, too soft or the wrong shape for its final placement.
Common questions
Why does my PNG still have a white rectangle?
The PNG may contain opaque white pixels rather than transparency. Inspect it over a contrasting background or run background removal before exporting a transparent PNG.
Is JPG always smaller than PNG?
No. The result depends on image content, dimensions and JPEG quality. Photographs and flat graphics compress differently. Compare the actual files.
Does a format change replace the original file?
CatalogPolish creates a new export. Keep your original source files and download the result separately.
